New Year’s Eve is just around the corner, and then we’re back to school (thank goodness!) on Jan 2. So…why not cook once and serve twice, using these cocktail party menus as a lunchbox inspiration for your little people? Here are a few classic holiday […]
Before we say goodbye to 2017, I wanted to recap a few of the wonderful ways we welcomed Hanukkah this year (because goodness knows how my memory holds up from year to year!): 1) We videotaped my family’s latke recipe and put it on YouTube. […]
Hi Everyone, It’s been months in the making, and maybe a year in my head, but finally I have a platform for sharing my behind the scenes hard work with someone other than my pre-schooler. We’re on Facebook. We’re on Instagram. We’re on YouTube. And […]
On Friday I walked into my mommy and me class with a jar of homemade tomatillo salsa, sharing the bounty from $1.26 of tomatillos I bought, roasted on a sheet pan with a couple of onions and garlic cloves and whirled in my blender with […]
With Valentine’s Day approaching, all the world seems to be fixated on hearts and roses, candies and sweet sayings. And while St. Valentine and his corresponding holiday are technically not a part of the Jewish faith, I appreciate that this holiday is a good reminder […]
My family adores broccoli stems. We love em peeled and raw, dipped, or peeled and chopped up with our sautéed broccoli. Even the baby prefers the stem to the “tree” of the broccoli. But you can’t buy just stems, so what’s a mama to do? […]
For those of you looking to buy a new lunchbox or up your lunch-packing game this semester, here is my list of my favorite lunch packing supplies — I’ll admit that it’s possible to pack lunch with less, but now that I’ve acquired this little […]
After living for years as a “challah buyer” (from the market, the bakery, or the PTA fundraisers at school), I’m finally a “challah baker” — and you can be too! What really sets this recipe from @MandylisciousChallah apart? I’m fairly sure it’s the bread flour! […]
Steamed apples just may be the simplest, most beloved fall foods that I’ve been feeding my girls for years. Not only are they a great “first food” for little eaters, they also keep great in the fridge, facilitate self-feeding by being graspable for BLW babies […]
Do your family a favor and make this fancy looking easy to pull off magic trick: a Baked Alaska! I broke this recipe down over 2 days: The day before: bake the cake and mould sherbet, ice cream or sorbet On the day of your […]
This is THE year!!! This time last year I was just starting up this blog and shared my family’s Hamantaschen recipe with you to “get the word out!” This year, I’m going even further, with the following new videos on Purim topics that I hope […]
It’s fall and mushrooms are in the markets and on our table! My daughters both have gone through early childhood “Mushroom phases” around 1-2 years of age. I attribute their love to a) trying mushrooms out on them (something that I’ve learned not all parents […]
I’m in FULL-ON meal planning and playdate prep right now with the high holidays around the corner! Rosh Hashanah was always an exciting time of year for me. It was probably mixed with my excitement for the start of a new school year, was a […]
Summertime! The weather is beautiful, the seasonal produce is amazing, but the days are long, and Mommy gets very tired by the end of them. It’s mid-July and I’m dragging. Summer break is not a break for me and the parents I know. Soon summer […]
Why parade around on the Fourth of July? Before I moved into my first house, I was giddy with excitement when a flier showed up on my doorstep one day. “SAVE THE DATE!” it said. “Annual 4th of July Parade.” I have been parading every […]
It’s been months in the making, and maybe a year in my head, but finally I have a platform for sharing my behind the scenes hard work with someone other than my pre-schooler. We’re on Facebook. We’re on Instagram. We’re on YouTube. And now we have a proper home for sharing ideas: Littlekosherlunch.com. Yay! Thank you for coming! 2018 is going to be great!!!
The first Little Kosher Lunch I ever packed! Egg salad sandwich with lettuce on multigrain bread, green grapes (which I later learned must be cut), cucumber slices, goldfish crackers, rambutan (The “Elmo” of the fruit world) and little chocolate candies for a treat.
Some background: With crazy excitement (and while about 8 months pregnant with my second), I started packing my first school lunches last year. It quickly became evident, after scouring the internet, that there were few resources to inspire and help me along as I packed daily Kosher-Style lunches for my daughter to take to her Jewish Preschool. The most popular “mommy blogs” and “back-to-school lunch roundups” weren’t helping with all their meat and cheese roll-ups and BLT skewers (as delicious as they all looked).
So, what’s a mama to do?! At first I was enraged, then I was determined to make the most gorgeous, delicious, mouthwatering lunches any toddler at a Jewish Dayschool had ever encountered. Of course. Right? Because I wanted my baby to eat and to love school. Because I really needed her to be in school, with baby 2 popping out at any moment. And I was pretty sure I wasn’t alone, because lunch-packing is generally thankless work, a job that is literally endless (do you need to eat lunch tomorrow? yup!), yet super-important to parents who want their children to eat nourishing food, and (let’s be honest), I’m sure most parents could use a few good ideas or suggestions, or perhaps some big-picture instructions for those who are new to the whole Kosher thing, as I was (i.e. Jew-ish parents who don’t keep kosher at home, intermarried families, non-Jews who have put their child into a Jewish school, etc).
Behold, “Little Kosher Lunch” was born. My hard work is documented here to help you try new things, new tools and little kitchen gadgets, introduce new flavors and tastes, and get out of whatever your lunch rut might be, kosher or not. (But if you do keep kosher, or pack kosher lunches, I have you covered!). I literally have hundreds of lunches documented, and I’m ready to share my recipes, favorite ingredients, time-savers and more with you in the coming months. We are lunch-packing in LA, so we have access to an amazing array of produce and ethnic markets, yet life is expensive here, so we are budget conscious too, and trying to cut down on waste (or wasted money) as much as possible. I’ll do my best to share my grocery shopping and menu planning philosophy here too, and as always, relish your feedback, suggestions, tips and what you’d like to se more of.
A Tip: Why on earth have I been taking photographs of all my lunches? Because at the end of the day, I was looking into an empty or half-emptied lunchbox and couldn’t remember what I’d packed in the morning (yes, I was that tired), so taking a picture helped me know what my daughter did and didn’t eat in the course of her day. If you have a fuzzy memory or just want to be sure of the foods that your school-kid is eating again and again, taking a quick picture on your phone might be helpful for you too. The eaten foods always get repeated and the rejects get reordered or reworked, knowing that maybe they weren’t popular for a fair reason (too crunchy, too full to eat it, tired of cucumbers, whatever!).
Running around like a crazy person? People coming over? With kids? Here are 3 super fast party food ideas that you can pick up in moments at the grocery store and set out in 30 minutes or less. All 3 are parve (no meat or […]
